The goal of being in South Africa is to show how Rollers, Vibrating Massage Balls and Voodoo Floss can impact athletic performance positively.

Brandon Burke, a Cape Town based, Bionkineticist joined Coach X in this session.

Introducing the Vortex Vibrating Roller. A vibrating roller causes a distraction for proprioceptors to deal with the pain. The truth of rolling is that it hurts. The pain is the bodies way of bringing about a change. When we experience pain it is physical and mental and in combination this enforces a release in the body.

Simple approach to rolling: lay on top of the roller.

  1. Roll in an up and down movement. It only moves blood.
  2. Find the sensitive areas where triggers are felt and hold in that position.
  3. This sends messages to the brain which draws a physical response.
  4. Breathe slowly and deeply. We forget the importance of breathing as a means of control.  The pain of rolling hurts in order to bring about change in the body.
  5. Pin and stretch is holding the position on the roller and then moving the joints of the limbs. This creates a different experience and releases the muscles more. In this instance reciprocal inhibition is the term used to describe the result of the stretch.
